Howdy!
We’re Philip and Megan Ulrich, adventurers at heart who traded traditional living for a life of freedom and exploration on the road.
In 2019, we downsized our stuff and moved from a studio apartment in Austin, Texas, into a 40-foot fifth-wheel toy hauler.
For the past five years, we’ve been full-time RVers traveling the U.S. with our two corgis, Butters and Waffles. We’ve explored the Midwest, South, and East Coast, visiting 22 states with our RV so far.
We created Outdoor-ish as a resource for all things RVing and outdoor adventures. From RV tips, campground reviews, and gear recommendations to hiking trail guides and destination recommendations, we share insights and inspiration to fuel your wanderlust.
The Road to Full-Time RVing
Our journey into full-time RV living goes back to 2015 when we were newlyweds who had just moved to a new city. It all started with a question from Philip while we were stuck sitting in traffic: “What if we bought an RV to live in?”
Philip’s idea initially stunned Megan, but it sparked a curiosity that led to watching countless RV shows and browsing YouTube, immersing ourselves in the world of full-time RVing.
We weren’t entirely sold on the idea yet but decided to see if we could downsize enough to make living in an RV a reality. Over the next couple of years, we downsized apartments from 1080 sq ft to 770 sq ft, and finally, a studio apartment of just 659 sq ft.
By 2018 a growing sense of burnout and the need for a lifestyle change became apparent. Philip juggled a full-time job in the tech industry and taught a college-level Python course, while Megan worked evenings and weekends as a bridal alterations specialist. We barely saw each other due to conflicting schedules!
A pivotal moment came in March 2018 during a week-long tent camping trip in Big Bend National Park. Amidst the rugged beauty of the desert landscape, we found ourselves craving a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle—one that allowed us to explore and reclaim our time together.
When we returned home, we dove into researching RVs, attending RV shows, and touring hundreds of RV models. In March 2019, we found and purchased our Dutchmen Voltage toy hauler (a year ahead of our timeline!) at the Austin RV Expo, marking the beginning of our RV journey.
Our Interests Outside of RVing
Beyond RVing, we love riding our bikes, getting out on the water in our kayaks, playing with our dogs, exploring state and national parks, and trying new restaurants during our travels.
An adrenaline junkie at heart, Philip thrives on thrilling experiences like roller coasters, jet skis, fast boats, and parasailing. However, heights are not his thing—you won’t find him skydiving anytime soon! Gaming is another one of his hobbies. His favorite games include modded Minecraft, Satisfactory, and Beat Saber. He also runs a lively Farming Simulator community that keeps him busy.
In her downtime, Megan finds joy in cross-stitching, making things with her Cricut, getting lost in a good book, or diving into a podcast. She has a fascination with real-life mysteries and is always down to watch a true crime documentary or listen to the latest episode of Crime Junkie.
